January 14, 2005

Online service Learning Conference registration

Georgia Learn and Serve in partnership with Valdosta State University is sponsoring a conference on academic service learning for Georgia Schools in Valdosta on January 14, 2005. This conference will be held at Valdosta High School's Fine Arts Center at 3101 N. Forrest Street Valdosta, GA 31602. The theme for this year's conference is a "Blast from the Past: Civics, Citizenship & Service".

Service learning is a teaching methodology that enriches learning by engaging students in meaningful service to their schools and communities that focuses on academic curricula. Service learning:

• Fosters student ownership of the learning
• Meets a school or community need
• Connects to the academic curriculum
• Encourages student reflection

Since serving learning can be implemented in all academic areas, with students of all ages, in single classroom or whole schools, conference presentations are sought in a wide spectrum which includes all academic areas including language arts, science, social studies, and mathematics, elementary, middle, and high schools, alternative education programs, and all federal programs. This conference is for classroom teachers, curriculum specialists, principals, curriculum directors, superintendents, Title I directors, RESA personnel, community-based organizations, business partners, school board members, and teacher/administrator preparation programs.

Through grant funds from Georgia Learn and Serve the conference registration and lunch-to-go will be provided free of charge for the first 200 participants to register."
