Identifying Characteristics of Biomes

By Laura Williams

List the objectives that support chosen learning standard goals and call for learners to gain information.

List the instructional strategies that might be used to accomplish the objectives.

List technology resources that might be used to accomplish the objectives.

Create & describe learning activities that incorporate identified instructional strategies and available technology resources in a way that allows the learner to accomplish objectives.

Think about creative forms of assessment, list some possibilities, match assessments with objectives.

Following an introductory lesson on factors that determine biome locations, students will visit http://www.earth.nasa.gov/gallery/ to identify the specific locations of world biomes.  Students will transfer this information onto student maps. Students will also visit http://www.terracruise.com/earth.html.  This virtual site allows students to attempt to identify various biomes as they take a panoramic view of the earth.

Students will use the discovery method of learning to identify distinguishing traits of various biomes.  Traits students are to identify include terrain, plants, and animals specific to the biomes.  Some websites students may visit to gather information include:

http://geography.berkeley.edu/personalpages/l_bennett/BennettVR/HTML/Southwest/ArizNewMex/ArizNewMex.html#TOC

http://www-geoimages.berkeleages/QTVR/QTVR.htmly.edu/GeoIm

These two websites are virtual sites and allow students to select regions on the North American continent.  Students may take a panoramic view of various sites to collect information on terrain, plants, and draw conclusions about climate.

http://www.richmond.edu/~ed344/webunits/biomes/biomes.html

This is a wonderful site although not VRML.  Students are able to learn much about the biome – specific information on plants, animals, climate, and other interesting facts.  Additional web links are assessable for student use.

Students may view the website on their own (that uses the vrml technology) and use the computer's PRINT SCREEN function to demonstrate they can navigate the map, read the legend, and print materials demonstrating their knowledge of how features on the map are reflected in the legend.

Initiating Activity:  (50 minutes)

Observation/Discussion

The introductory lesson will focus on student observations of various biome posters displayed around the classroom.  Students will be asked to list common factors of the displayed biomes.  This activity is followed with listing various obvious differences between the biomes.  A class discussion will focus on the similarities and differences discovered in their investigation.

Guided Learning Activity:

Students may pair off to work on the computer related projects.

Activity 1:  Locate the biomes at the following websites:

http://www.terracruise.com/earth.html

 http://www.earth.nasa.gov/gallery/

Transfer the location of biomes around the world onto your maps.

While taking a virtual tour around the globe, list biomes you can identify and their approximate location.

Activity 2:  Take a virtual tour of various regions of North America to view characteristics of biomes.  As you visit the sites http://geography.berkeley.edu/personalpages/l_bennett/BennettVR/HTML/Southwest/ArizNewMex/ArizNewMex.html#TOC

http://www-geoimages.berkeleages/QTVR/QTVR.htmly.edu/GeoIm  identify the biome viewed, describe the terrain and types of vegetation.  Continue on your fact-finding mission and visit website: http://www.richmond.edu/~ed344/webunits/biomes/biomes.html.

Gather information about each biome.  You may want to copy images into a folder to be used for activity 3.

Activity 3: Select one biome and prepare a Powerpoint presentation using the information you gathered. Your presentation must include:

·        Map identifying biome location

·        Photo of the biome

·        Examples of plants common to the region

·        Examples of animals common to the region

·        Climate

·        Interesting facts

Culminating Performance:

Students will present Powerpoint programs to classmates.  Assessment will be  teacher evaluation of presentation and accuracy of information.
