SIMPLE ANIMALS

by Laura Williams, Colquitt County High School, Georgia

Developed using the TECHNOLOGY AND LEARNING CONTINUUM MODEL

List the objectives that support chosen learning standard goals and call for learners to gain information.

List the instructional strategies that might be used to accomplish the objectives.

List technology resources that might be used to accomplish the objectives.

Create & describe learning activities that incorporate identified instructional strategies and available technology resources in a way that allows the learner to accomplish objectives.

Think about creative forms of assessment, list some possibilities, match assessments with objectives.

Objectives

Subject:

Science

Strand/Course:

Topic:

Simple Animals

Number:

NA

Standard:

S.20  describes the anatomy and physiology of each phyla of       invertebrates

-observe prepared specimens

-idenitfy classification, symmetry and distinguishing characteristics

-Presentation

-Discovery

-Problem solving

-QTVR sites on the Internet

-Computers

Use the QTVR site located on tidal pools in a lab setting or small groups to view and manipulate images of a tidal pool at high and low tide.  Learners will compare and contrast structural similarities of the organisms that exist in ecosystems of the tide pools.

This learning activity is designed to be used in a below grade level biology class or a middle school life science class.

The QTVR site address is: http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/edgeofsea/tidepool.html

Assessment will be teacher evaluation of student charts.

Initiating Activity:

Observation/Discussion

Students will observe prepared specimens of Porifera, Cnidarians, and Echinoderms.  Students will note classification, symmetry and distinguishing characteristics in a discussion format.

Following observation and discussion, students will go to the computer lab and begin the guided learning activity.

Guided Learning Activity:

Using a teacher-made chart, students will work in pairs to complete the required assignment.

View organisms found in a tidal pool online at: http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/edgeofsea/tidepool.html

Make careful examination of the organisms given on the worksheet.  Be sure to view the “hot spots” in the QTVR at low tide and high tide!

Complete all information specified on the worksheet.  Be specific – list and/or draw as much detail as possible.

Students may visit the QTVR site to view more examples of invertebrates:
